India has made significant strides in utilizing plastic waste for road construction. As of July 2021, 703 km of National Highways have been constructed using waste plastic in the wearing coat of flexible pavement. This initiative not only helps in managing plastic waste but also in enhancing the quality of roads. The technology was developed by Prof. Rajagopalan Vasudevan, known as the ‘Plastic Man of India’, and it involves using waste plastic along with bituminous mixes for road construction. The process includes heating the plastic waste and mixing it with bitumen to lay down the road, which is both an eco-friendly and durable solution. By 2019, India had built 21,000 miles of roads using plastic waste, and the number has been growing since. This innovative approach is a part of India’s efforts to tackle the challenge of plastic waste disposal and promote sustainable infrastructure development.
